What you'll gain
This course gives arts educators the practical, hands-on ceramics knowledge needed to teach with confidence. Each module is delivered by Kathy at the KayBee studio — a working ceramics factory, studio, and academy in one space.
You won’t just observe. You’ll make, glaze, and fire work yourself, so that when you return to your classroom or university, you have real experience behind every lesson you teach.
The full course covers the complete ceramics process — from raw clay to finished, fired piece.
The four modules
A thorough introduction to the three core hand-building methods: pinch pots, slab building, and coil work. Each educator makes a sample piece using every technique, building muscle memory alongside method knowledge.
4-hour lesson
Explore and apply surface decoration techniques including underglaze finishes, sgraffito, and coloured slips. Each method is explained in context, then applied directly to work so educators understand both the theory and the feel.
You leave able to teach and demonstrate decorating techniques with real experience behind them.
Learn how glazes are mixed, why they behave differently, and the range of application techniques. Educators mix glazes themselves and apply them to their own work — removing the mystery that so often makes glazing feel intimidating.
You leave understanding glaze chemistry and application well enough to guide students through the process.
Demystify the kiln. Educators are shown various kiln types, how the components work, and correct packing methods. Everyone gets hands-on practice packing a kiln — essential knowledge for any ceramics educator managing studio equipment.
You leave with a solid understanding of kiln operation and the confidence to oversee kiln processes in your own studio.
